The Grand Hotel Karel V opened its doors in the year 2000 and has been one of the most remarkable hotels in Utrecht ever since. The building is steeped in history and character and all the facilities of this prestigious 5-star hotel will make your stay unforgettable.
In the year 2000, the prestigious Grand hotel Karel V was opened in the historical centre of Utrecht. A complete renovation of the building of the former Teutonic Order was the beginning of this remarkable journey. This building stems from the 14th century and was formerly known as the Duitse Huis (German House). Emperor Charles V stayed in this building in 1546 with his sister Mary of Hungary when he attended the Chapter Meeting of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Since then, various famous historical figures have been a guest in this hotel and some of the rooms in the hotel still carry their names.
The hotel consists of different parts, including the Napoleontic wing, the Garden Wing and the farm building. The new Roman wing, with its 30 new hotel rooms combines an air of Roman history with 100 ontemporary elegance and luxury. Besides the addition of the hotel rooms, the hotel has invested in an upgrade of the existing rooms and in new facilities. The heart of this Roman wing is formed by a beautiful wellness centre with a sauna, steambath and swimming pool with a jetstream, as well as a seperate room with fitness equipment.
Grand Hotel Karel V has thirteen conference and meeting rooms. All rooms have been restored in keeping with the original historic ambience and charm, which makes them perfectly suitable for business purposes and parties. The Graaf van Leicester Auditorium is equipped with the most modern facilities. The Unico van Wassenaer Zaal has its own particular style and ambience. In this room, for example, a beautiful oak wood arch construction has been restored in its former glory.
The new Executive rooms are situated in the Roman wing and the Superior rooms can be found in the Napoleontic Wing. Due to the historical character of the building, all the rooms are decorated differently and have a distinctive atmosphere. In the room, you will find all the modern facilities you can expect from a hotel of this classification.
Food and Drinks
A luxury breakfast with a wide variety of dishes is served in Grand Restaurant Karel V. Here you will find different kinds of bread, sandwich fillings, hot dishes and drinks. This restaurant has a rich and lengthy history and has been awarded a Michelin star; in the evening it serves a delicious meal, prepared in a kitchen that is run by one of the few meestergastronomen (culinary masters) of the Netherlands.
The former kitchen of the monastery is now home to Brasserie Goeie Louise, which offers an ever-changing menu with many seasonal specialities. For a nice drink or a good glass of wine, you can go to Caves Caroli, two bars that are located in the medieval arched vault under the hotel.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the Wellness Centre will have limited facilities available to you until March 7th 2010. The jetstream-pool and whirlpool will not be accessible during this period. All other facilities such as the Sauna, Fitness, Steambath and Solarium will be accessible to you.

- Excellent location and room, staff very helpful. Jug of milk brought over to remedy lack of milk. Breakfast very good, menu for restaurant not to our liking as fish/vegetarian and rather expensive. That said Utrecht offered many other alternatives which we found to our liking, especially the De Beveling restaurant A beautiful city with splendid walks, bars, canals and oh so friendly

- Friendly and efficient staff. Nice room (but see problem below) and great breakfast. Super location. Good price for the quality of the room.
- The room was continuously hot, to the point of being unbearable. Having the a/c on at full blast didn't help at all. The only possibility (worked at night only) was to have both windows wide open. One problem seemed to be the hot floor of the bathroom, which continuously pumped heat out into the room.
None of the advanced features (e.g. room bill, pay movies) on the TV worked.

- Heerlijk hotel, mooie kamers, zeer vriendelijk personeel, waanzinnige badkamer. Je loopt zo het centrum in, parkeren ideaal. We zijn werkelijk vol lof over dit heerlijke hotel. Zeker aan te raden en wij gaan nog eens terug!

- The first night of my stay I dined in the Brassarie. I was told at first there were no tables avaiable, but one was found for me. There were, in fact, several empty tables when I was seated which were never filled while I was in the dinning room. After placing my order I had to wait an unacceptably long time to be served both my salad and main dish. For each I had to inquire what was taking so long to prepare my food. The staff was helpful when asked, but not overly attentive throughout the meal. The quality of the food was passable at best, not of the standard I would have expected from a hotel this quality. After this unfortunate experience I took all my meals outside of the hotel.

- The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. There was a festival going on in the park near the hotel and a member of the staff waited for us in the grounds until we returned so he could give us free tickets to the fair!
Breakfast was delicious and served in a beautiful dinning room.
Location of the hotel is beautiful. Room was quiet, despite the festival and very central.
- It was a very hot week when we visited and the airconditioning didn't work (the fan worked but no cool air came out of the unit). Also there was a lot of noise when the room next to ours used their shower, however this was probably noticable because they used it at 2am.

- Het eten is super. Zelfs een bijgerechtje als wortels smaakt verrassend. Het menu met wijnarrangement is zeker aan te bevelen. De bediening is persoonlijk en hartelijk.

- Fantastische kamer met goede faciliteiten en erg schoon. Vriendelijke bediening en voorkomend personeel.
- Extra geld wordt gevraagd voor ontbijt en parkeren en dat zou bij een prijs van € 200,00 per nacht er toch wel bij in mogen zijn.
Verder was de hagelslag wit uitgeslagen en moest ik door de regen naar het ontbijt.
