Description
Hotel Bitter en Zoet (Bitter and Sweet) lies in the middle of the beautiful Drenthe countryside. This hotel is housed in the stunningly renovated former hospital complex of Veenhuizen. The complex was originally built to provide care and rehabilitation for orphans, the poor and vagrants from big cities. It was later turned into a penal colony. You can learn all about the turbulent history of this complex at the Gevangenismuseum (Prison Museum).
Those who appreciate peace, space and good food have come to the right place. Staff are both welcoming and helpful. There is a private health club with a traditional Finnish sauna, an infrared sauna (short wave) with colour-light therapy, as well as an infrared sauna (medium to long wave) with daylight and colour-light therapy. You can also enjoy a heavenly massage here. The complex also offers a genuine health academy, where you can take part in workshops, for example, in stress managament and a healthy lifestyle. Registration for these courses should be done well in advance.
The elegant spacious double rooms are housed in three townhouses, each with their own name, Toewijding (Devotion), Bitter en Zoet (Bitter and Sweet) and Plichtgevoel (Sense of Duty). Each room has a unique atmosphere as well as good box-spring beds, LCD television and a bathroom with a shower and toilet. The rooms on the ground floor are specially designed for disabled guests, and the hotel offers extra care, in collaboration with Icare Thuiszorg (Home Care Services), available on request.
