De Oude Smidse literally means The Old Forge. The building was previously used as a forge where horses were shoed. Hotel De Oude Smidse has fully adapted to modern times and offers modern and comfortable facilities and many opportunities for recreation. After an active day out, you can relax in Bistro de Ploeg and enjoy a snack and drink, read the newspaper, or play boule. The area is great for walking or cycling and within half an hour's drive lies the vibrant provincial capital Groningen that offers some great shopping and museums.

In the vicinity of the village lies Het Hogeland, a vast area that offers many recreational opportunities. You can walk the famous Pieterpad long distance walking track - that runs all the way from the north of Groningen to the southern part of the province of Limburg, take a boat to visit the Frisian island of Schiermonnikoog, or visit the seal sactuary in Pieterburen.
