    centrally located

Comfortable room, nice setting, and next to a micro-brewery

no lift, so a bit of a challenge lugging bags up and down 3 flights

    Good location. Clean. Friendly.

Room view was of court yard which was messy and seemed to be a dumping ground for old furniture. This made room dark as we had to close curtains to block out view

“My tip: Ask for canal view at booking”

Clean, comfortable, traditional furnishings and decoration

Good place to stay that was convenient, comfortable, and at a reasonable price. The other, big chain hotels in Leiden may closer to the center of town, but they are also much more expensive. The Hotel Nieuw Minerva Leiden is near the pedestrian shopping area and within easy walking distance to the train station. It is really very comfortable and has old-fashioned Dutch flair. Free wireless in the lobby. The 7 euros for breakfast is also a great deal!

I didn't have a problem, but if you cannot walk up steep flights of stairs, this hotel is not for you.

beatiful hotel right in Leiden center

location right at the town center by a canal. My room was decorated with classical paintings and was otherwise very artistic too

Very pleasant, quiet, and clean. Easy walk to restaurants and museums. Good breakfast. If I return to Leiden, this will be my first choice

    Must be better options

Quirky, charming old building, easy walking distance of station and all of central and historic Leiden.

Construction work nearby meant that the room and everything in it were shaking quite a lot during the day. Laughably expensive wi-fi. Lots of stairs, no lift.

Comfortable, clean, beautifully decorated, friendly staff, welcoming environment. In the heart of Leiden, within walking distance (5/10 mins) from the train station, museums, shops, markets and other places of cultural/recreational interest.

Breakfast and Wi-Fi access charged separately, the latter very expensive. No lift, steep stairs.

That fact that it is in Leiden. There are so few hotels there that this is one of the few options available.

Very grumpy receptionist on my arrival made me feel very unwelcome.

Modest but good value for money

Good location; historic area; clean, functional room with own shower & WC; nice breakfast. Good value for money.

Tiny room (which is not unusual for the Netherlands; if they say "single room" they mean it). Staff not particularly friendly (also fairly normal for the Netherlands). Steep stairs and no elevator, hence more suitable for younger, energetic people. Wireless Internet extortionately expensive.

Noisy: wooden floors in adjoining rooms are *very* audible

Great loation, tiny rooms, expensive and faded...

Secure indoor bike storage. Very friendly staff. Excellent cental location - in the best part of historic Leiden. THe communal areas look tired but have good character. Adequate breakfast included.

Tiny box room with an outward opening door. Even tinier bathroom with lots of mould. Dead mosquitos squashed all over the ceiling. Soggy old beds.Very expensive for what it is... How many opinionated, loud American students can you fit in one hotel?

    Perfect Location and Gracious Staff

Perfect location, lovely hotel, gracious staff. The friendly atmosphere made my long stay (6 days) quite comfortable. Whenever I return to Leiden to visit family, this will be my choice hotel.

Proximity, Charm and Exceptional Value (but keep it a secret!)

If we wanted to serve ourselves, we would not disclose the wonderful secret of the Hotel NML - obviously, we would want to come back again and find rooms available at the same reasonable rates. We didn\'t know Leiden when we booked, but we could not have been in a better location to explore the heart of Leiden. Up the steeg to the main buslines, stroll down the charming canal - or perhaps walk further on the cobblestoned streets to ever more enchanting views. Beautiful! Our room had three large windows that overlooked the canal - some might say that our room was quaint - the reason we didn\'t give a \"10\" but only an \"8\" was because of the expectations of those used to staying in sterile - impersonal hotels - Hotel NML would not suit them - and perhaps the lack of an elevator would be a hindrance as well. The breakfast that came with the room was ample, the ambiance splendid and we can\'t say enough nice things about the staff(s). We neglected to have a meal at the hotel, but perhaps we may come back again to see more of Leiden - we came to visit family in the area. The temperature was perfect for us, the street noises \"charming\", the bed was comfortable. We didn\'t try the TV at all. Perhaps a different shower door would increase the experience of using the toilet in our particular room - it was kind of close quarters at times. We were very pleased with every aspect of the hotel and would definitely consider staying there again. Our travel agent refused to book us there, which is why we came to the hotel.nl website to book the hotel ourselves - we have nice things to say about the website also. Again, our setting was nearly perfect for us, but we were not looking for the mid-range cookie cutter amenities that most expect. We could give all tens for our experience - and in a 16th century house too -! My husband wanted to reemphasize the remarkable helpfulness of the staff - they were great in every aspect. We were very appreciative of their English skills.

We had ZERO minus points. Our viewpoint is that the hotel was \"different\". In fairness, we must mention the lack of an elevator (we were aware that we would have some issues without one, but we managed - even with heavy luggage). We were there for a full week - perhaps the breakfast could have varied more during that time, but it was ample and delicious and certainly there were many things to sample! The breakfast room was darling (we even took pictures!) We were blessed to have excellent weather all during our stay - we\'re not so certain that in stormy weather or in very hot weather that our room would have been as amenable - we are used to central heat and air conditioning, but again, just different is our viewpoint. If the hotel had prepared a little more information for foreign guests, perhaps we would have found our way around a little easier during our first few days. We came during what turned out to be a holiday weekend in Holland and missed the open hours of the VVV tourist place and the museums seemed to be closed on the Monday, so that was a bit of a challenge. We loved everything and would be more than happy to stay there several weeks (with an occasional breakfast somewhere else - croissants and bananas perhaps). Some might say that \"quaintness\" is a minus point - the Hotel NML is a grand lady who wears her age charmingly. We can only mention that we were not successful with either the telephone (our inexperience) or the electrical converters we brought - the outlets were recessed and we could not plug in our battery charger for our camera and had to purchase batteries where we could find them (I had heart failure at the expense of SEVEN EUROS for 4 AA batteries) - we were soaked for those! Our credit card payment for the hotel was smooth and we were delighted by that - it was our airline mileage card that worked. We noticed in the literature we got during our visit that the canals are quite a party area during the warmer summer months - if that is the case, perhaps we would not have enjoyed our canalside room quite so much (we could hear people at 3 am, but it was just \"charming\", not viewed as a problem. One comment about the website - booking dates are done as numbers only - it would be very helpful to \"spell out\" the month - for example, Americans don\'t think DD/MM/YYYY - they think they are booking MM/DD/YYYY - so we were somewhat worried that we had the wrong month - it would be helpful if the reservation came back as 2 May 2009 to 9 May 2009 instead of 2.5.09 to 9.5.09. Thank you all - we had a most splendid trip and would have liked to stay much longer.
