Hotel
Close to the provincial borders of Friesland and Drenthe, Fletcher Hotel - Restaurant De Zon is established in a white building on a corner. Built in 1870, it is in the very heart of Oosterwolde, opposite the canal Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart. This village is therefore a great place for guests to moor their boat. The vast woods of the Drents-Friese Wold are perfect for walking and cycling. Plus, you'll find theatres, cafés, shops and museums in the charming nearby town of Assen.
Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant De Zon has a historic façade dating back to 1870, and a modern and comfortably furnished interior. It offers a good restaurant with a bar. Guests can relax in the lounge and watch television. The hotel furthermore offers a sauna, a sunbed and a gym. Enjoy a seat on the outdoor terrace with a view of the canal, and watch the boats pass by. Several stylish (meeting) rooms are available for parties, functions and business events. One of these rooms is a theatre complete with a stage. All rooms come with a bathroom with a separate bath and shower, a telephone, television and a radio. Please note that there is no door between the bedroom and bathroom in the Double Room.
Surroundings
The area of Ooststellingwerf lies on the foothill of the Drents plateau. Numerous walking and cycling routes will lead you through the surroundings of Fletcher Hotel - Restaurant de Zon. Extensive woodlands, sand drifts, heathlands and fens characterise this beautiful landscape. The Fochteloërveen is particularly special, and is one of the last remaining peat moors. With a little luck, birdwatchers might even spot the rare crane. Or head to the fun amusement park of Duinen Zathe in the neighbouring village of Appelscha. And for some typical Frisian hospitality be sure to visit the local farms selling fresh produce.
Food and Drink
An extensive breakfast buffet is available in the attractive breakfast room every morning. Kitchen staff will gladly take into account any dietary or allergy related preferences, providing the hotel is informed in advance. After a busy day out, simply relax and enjoy a nice drink at the bar or by the cosy fireplace. On sunny days it's lovely to sit outside and watch the boats pass by. And a delicious dinner is served in the hotel restaurant in the evening. All dishes are prepared using fresh, local farm produce. The restaurant offers an à la carte menu as well as daily menus and specials. Aside from cooking classic dishes, the chef also loves to surprise you with an experimental touch.

Safe parking. Polite staff. Comfortable room. Restaurant in-house or several places nearby. Decent breakfast buffet.
If I had to think of something - it can get a tad noisy outside in the high street quite late at weekends.
“My tip: Resaurant is good but pricey if on a budget. Snack bar pizzeria opposite, more off the high stret.”

Friendly reception staff. Good breakfast included. After my last (rather negative feedback I am pleased to say the long-standing manager appears to be back. Didn t fancy testing the bar staff again (noticed the same young lady still in attendance) so had an early night.
Although the view is preferrable looking out front, the high street can be a little lively of a Saturday evening.
“My tip: Cafe the other side of the canal if the restaurant too pricy.”

Good Wi-fi decent breakfast
Stay here a few times a year and the hotel seems to have been some staff changes recently - and not for the best. On check-in was simply handed a key. Had to ask for directions to my room. Told sharply to Wait a minute when trying to order a drink at the bar. I made it my last. Then to top it off the manager decided, without explanation or apology to those of us trying to have a quiet drink in the bar, to bring in a step-ladder and start drilling holes in the ceiling.
