De Oude Smidse literally means The Old Forge. The building was previously used as a forge where horses were shoed. Hotel De Oude Smidse has fully adapted to modern times and offers modern and comfortable facilities and many opportunities for recreation. After an active day out, you can relax in Bistro de Ploeg and enjoy a snack and drink, read the newspaper, or play boule. The area is great for walking or cycling and within half an hour's drive lies the vibrant provincial capital Groningen that offers some great shopping and museums.

Hotel De Oude Smidse lies in the north of the province of Groningen, in the middle of Westernieland. Situated near the village is Het Hogeland. The surroundings are also perfect for beautiful bike rides and canoeing.

It is located at the back of the property, where the horses were shoed and farming equipement was repaired and this gives the restaurant a special ambience.
