In 1811 Napoleon had an impressive fortress, the Fort Napoleon, built at the dunes, because he feared an attack on the port of Ostend from England, however this never happened. Next to the fort lies a charming bistro. The Wellington Racetrack was named after the Duke of Wellington and was built in the late 19th century. On the grounds of the racecourse lies the Wellington golf club and this is only 10 minutes away from Hotel Louise Ostend. The lighthouse [i]Lange Nelle[/i] has guided many fishermen safe into the fishing port since 1949. It is the fourth lighthouse in the history of Ostend and the third at the same location.
