At the unique 5-star Grand Hotel Karel V, you'll be staying within a monumental ambience in one of Utrecht's most beautiful locations. The Central Station and sights and attractions such as the Dom Tower and the Oudegracht canal are only a few minutes' walk away. Furthermore, the centre of Utrecht is teeming with charming shops, lovely outdoor terraces, and attractive art and culture.

The spacious rooms combine authentic allure with modern luxury. The facilities are geared towards comfort, such as the Nespresso coffee machine, a bathrobe with slippers, and free WiFi. The hotel also has a spa and fitness centre offering a sauna and a jet-stream bath. For a relaxing massage or a luxury facial, you can visit the hotel's beauty salon, PUUR by Kristel.

Restaurant Karel 5 distinguishes itself by combining culinary tradition with contemporary taste. Under the supervision of Head Leon Mazairac and Maître-Sommelier Johan Kragtwijk, dishes are created to a high gastronomic standard. And for an informal setting, you can visit the traditional Bistro Karel 5.

Walk out of the Grand Hotel Karel V through the city side and you'll find yourself standing in the very heart of Utrecht's historic centre. The lively city centre with its unique wharf terraces, the Dom tower and charming canals are certainly worth exploring on foot. The same goes for Zadelstraat and Lijnmarkt, where you'll find splendid antique shops, trendy fashion boutiques, surprising gift shops and excellent book shops. Are you seeking peace and quiet? Then walk a little further to the beautiful courtyards and squares gracing the canals and the Nieuwgracht.

Food and Drink

Connoisseurs will be able to indulge themselves from breakfast to dinner at Restaurant Karel 5 or at Bistro Karel 5; this hotel's two excellent restaurants. At Restaurant Karel 5, the chef and sommelier will whisk you away into their world of culinary fantasies. The authentic room of Bistro Karel 5 is very suitable for an informal lunch or dinner. You can take lovely walks around the hotel and through the gardens measuring no less than 10,000 m2. And afterwards, simply descend on the bistro's terrace where you can enjoy either a drink or lunch or dinner. The terrace is renowned as one of the most beautiful and sunniest terraces in Utrecht!

A lovely place to stay in Utrecht.

Lovely staff. Excellent service. Wonderful food. Comfortable beds. Bathroom facilities . Will be returning in August.

Overall nice but considering the price there is room for improvement

Stayed in the bridal suite in the Romeinse Vleugel. Plus points include nice jacuzzi bath with a window in the bathroom, nice bed, view of the Dom, high ceiling and stylish decor with blend of antique & modern. The pool area is open until 11 pm, which is very nice.

Speakers in the bathroom where the jacuzzi is and other areas of the room seem pretty crucial to set the mood in a bridal suite, but the sound only came from the TV and therefore was quite lacking. The playlists for the music could be much improved upon. Disappointed that breakfast isn't included. In the bridal suite there should be complimentary champagne or wine and water or chocolate at the very least. A balcony for this room would have been lovely considering the view of the Dom.

“My tip: Eat at the Grand Restaurant if you can! I didn't go there this time because it was closed for summer holidays but was there twice before and had the full menu with wine pairings -- simply divine experience both times!”

We look forward to our return stay again at the GrandHotel Karel V.

Very accommodating staff. Clean, quiet and well appointed room. The hotel is in an excellent location.

Lighting in the room could be improved.

“My tip: See "Plus Points" above.”

    Brilliant location.

Exceptionally convenient location, only yards from the city centre. Parking available. Free wi-fi and computer use Nice garden setting Rooms in new part large, well decorated and comfy.

Very clinical, used to be a hospital and still the feel of a hospital on the corridors and outside facade. Couldn't eat in the hotel as brasserie fully booked. Swimming pool only a jet pool but in all fairness so much else to do no time to use it.

“My tip: Be careful with breakfast very expensive”

    Best stay to the Price

Location is excellent with a Nice garden and only 5 min Walker to center of the old City

    Fantastic food and location

A stunning setting - centrally positioned - EXCELLENT food!

The room was a little shabby - with a few loose fixtures and fittings, such as the grab rail in the bath and the shower leaked!

Nice hotel in centre of Utrecht

Very nice hotel in the centre of Utrecht. Well located with near perfect breakfast and dinner. Clean with nice wellness/jetpool facilities.

No double bed even after having asked for it and in the morning only lukewarm water for shower.

A great alternative to staying in Amsterdam

The staff was exceptionally kind and helpful. The grounds were lovely. It was a treat to stay in Utrecht and easy to take the train into Amsterdam and the surrounding cities.

I had to ask for the room to be cleaned more thoroughly. The room was adequate but not at all luxurious - they may have better rooms. There was no clock unless you kept the television on and I needed more lighting-it was dark. The food I ordered from room service was mediocre.

Offers great service, and charges you for it.

Lost reservation somewhere, but managed to change from a double-room to single room. Claimed to not be able to change price, so they threw in complimentary taxi and breakfast.

5 star hotel in downtown Utrecht, NL

Quality of the room and services versus price of accomodation. Excellent restaurant and very good location.

The heating system is very poor explained in the room. They could offer a better service in this area.

    Refreshing delicious stay

Service in the hotel and the team spirit of the personel was so nice to witness. The way they took care of us and especially the little boy was wonderfull. The access to the hart of the city of Utrecht is in a perfect location. Oh the food is marvelous. Definatly coming back for another visit

There was not a lot to choose from during breakfast.

    A touch of luxury

The hotel is beautiful. THe service is good - a concierge takes you to your room. We felt very pampered.

Breakfast is not included and is an expensive extra.

A luxury experience in an elegant setting.

World class cuisine at the Grand Restaurant, with creative menus, paired wine arrangements, and excellent service. Highly recommended.

Expensive, but good value for money.

    Excellent at a price

Nice hotel. Lovely room. Complimentary LAN connection. Umbrellas offered when it poured down.

Mix of old and new: the new is gleaming but not as charming.

    Wonderful bank holiday break

Excellent location and room, staff very helpful. Jug of milk brought over to remedy lack of milk. Breakfast very good, menu for restaurant not to our liking as fish/vegetarian and rather expensive. That said Utrecht offered many other alternatives which we found to our liking, especially the De Beveling restaurant A beautiful city with splendid walks, bars, canals and oh so friendly

No milk for tea, only two standard non fruit teabags amongst the vast array in the box. View of building work in progress directly outside was disappointing but don\'t let this put you off

Excellent hotel, lovely bedroom, first class restaurant, very good wine list. Conveniently located near heart of old town, but only 5 minutes from rail station.

Looks like a former barracks, but do not let that put you off.
