A well-located freindly hotel with real Amsterdam character
  • + Excellent location; Friendly helpful staff. Great breakfast and clean new ensuite bathrooms.
  • A challenging staircase but once the luggage is up it is part of the real Amsterdam experience.
  • * my tip Travel light because of the staircase; Easy access by tram - Trams 1,2 & 5 from the Central Station & get off at Leidseplein; Tram 7 & 10 stop almost in front at Raamplein. Great value breakfast!

Loved this hotel!
  • + In such a great location for bars and restaurants. Only 15 mins walk (and a really pretty walk) to the Red Light District. Had the comfiest bed I have ever slept in and our room was cleaned daily. Friendly staff and a great little bar. Cool decor in rooms.
  • Nothing at all - I loved it!
  • * my tip Walk around the area rather than catching the tram - its beautiful. Nearby bar called Lux is really good and open till about 4am.

Fun budget, boutique hotel. Nice staff but loud street noise!
  • + Great location! Fun rock n roll theme. Nice staff...
  • Very loud street noise. People walking home drunk and REALLY loud from bars or wherever all nite long on street out front. No A/C so couldn't shut window to keep out noise.
  • * my tip Bring good ear plugs! Enjoy how close you are to everything!

Uber cool place to stay in Amsterdam
  • + What a great hotel! The guys who work here are so nice and helpful, the room (Jagermeister room) was first rate and very clean and the hotel is just five minutes away from the Paradiso, which was great for us. I would 100% stay a here again.
  • None what so ever.
  • * my tip Ask for the Jagermeister room (it sleeps five)

  • + Great service...fun and interesting decor. Awesome bar!
  • Shared bathrooms...which are smelly.

Could imagine to choose it again in case of another amsterdam trip
  • + Personel is extremely kindly and helpful, atmosphere is very nice, breakfast: price/quality relation is very good
  • low hygiene ranking is because of the bathroom: mould-infested, rinsing reservoir of toilet was leaky, floor of bathroom not cleaned for days; no towels - thought it wasn't incl. due to the low price and didn't ask at the reception; but got some at the last day of stay - should have asked ;-)

Weekend experience in the city
  • + The hotel was in the perfect area - close to the centre but not right in the centre. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Everything you need for a getaway to Amsterdam.
  • The room was very small. This is fine for a short stay (4 days or less) but may cause problems for someone with more luggage

The Backstage Hotel - Cool, Relaxing, Cheap and Friendly!! :)
  • + Great stay at this Hotel. Very Friendly staff and a good budget price. Very close to a buzzing square with many food, coffeeshops and pubs. Lots of Live music and shows around this area. Short 15/20 minute walk to red light district and central amsterdam, down beautiful alleys and streets and the tram runs from the square if you dont want to walk. I will stay again when i return - plus its cool that everything is made from musical instruments - our light was a drum and our bed made of guitar cases - so cool!! :)
  • The only minus points i can think of are the noise of the hoover at 9.30am every morning waking us up as they hoover and clean the hallway outside and other rooms, and that my shower gel and washing stuff went missing when i left it in the shower, but i guess i should have kept it in my room. Apart from these two very minor gripes it is a lovely, relaxing hotel.

  • No toliet or shower in the room but there is a sink. The stairs are almost vertical and no lift.

Great Design
  • + A fun and atmospheric hotel in a good location near some of Amsterdam's live music venues. We had come to Amsterdam for a gig so the "back stage" rock theme added to our experience. Very friendly and helpful staff.
  • Very steep stairs!

a quality clean hotel at the price. great staff and ambiance
  • + friendly service and staff. great vibe. reasonably priced.
  • a bit further from Dam Square than suggested, but only a 15 minute walk and you can get a tram from nearby

  • (Travelling alone)
very original and superfriendly place with some limitations
  • + Very friendly and cordial staff, really great. You feel that this hotel was created out of passion and the staff seems passionate about it. Funny location - also for "non-rockers"..
  • Well ... empty cans under the bed, a bit of dust, but nothing too bad. And like many places in Amsterdam extremely steep staircases - so if you have a lot of luggage it is an adventure to climb them. (Was glad when I checked out without a broken ankle). The coffee at breakfast was quite bad...

cool hotel, with great location and better staff
  • + The staff at the Backstage could not have been nicer or more helpful! They really made our short stay in Amstradam SO much easier. Their decor is original and cool, the breakfast was great, and it is a fairly close to everything you could want to see.
  • I can't think of many, we loved it here!

Great historic hotel
  • + The staff was very friendly and helpful. The beds were very comfortable, which is not always the case in quad rooms in Europe. Even with the steep stairs, I highly recommend this hotel, good location and wonderful historic building.
  • They are telling the truth about steep stairs and quad rooms being on higher floors! Killer spiral staircase! I think they should have an option to pay someone to bring your bags to the room if you would like that.....surley they could find a strong kid that could make some money hauling bags! Maybe we should pack lighter!

forget it for business
  • + interestingly designed room very clean good tv ipod dock
  • just too noisy if you are on business. Walls are paper thin and trams make the whole building rumble which i have never known before and i have stayed all over Amsterdam .

Couple of improvements short of an excellent hotel
  • + Brilliant interior design, clean rooms, comfortable beds. The staff are friendly and effective. Quite simply flawless service.
  • A bit noisy rooms, the doors seem a bit thin or poorly soundproofed. Apparently there's only one shared shower for the whole hotel even though there were supposed to be showers in the upper floors as well, at least according to the safety plan. Very, very steep stairs but that's the case in most smaller hotels in Amsterdam.

Perfect! Great hotel, great location!
  • + This 'end of town' is so much nicer than the red light district the other end - much more chilled-out and relaxing, and away from the stag do's and pissed-up Brits. Get a spot by the river outside the Hard Rock Cafe on a nice sunny day (as I did) and you'll love it!
  • It's a bit of a walk from the station (though you could always get a tram), but that's about all.

Fantastic hotel, would stay again!
  • + Great location, great staff, and perhaps the most comfortable single beds I've ever slept on! Decent priced beer too (for Amsterdam anyway).
  • 'Basic' rooms, located on 1st floor and basement, can be very noisy, with trams going past and noise easily heard from the bar.

  • (Young couples)
Stay here it's really good!
  • + Everything! We had a double room with a bathroom, it was clean and modern, the beds were really comfy. The staff were friendly and helpful - The location is fantastic for Leidseplein! This will be my first choice next time we come back to Amsterdam - you cannot find anything better for the money!
  • None - don't worry about the trams outside, they are not that loud and didn't bother us all!

Back Stage - Wel'll Be Back!
  • + Great for music lovers in terms of decor, memorabilia and just across the road from Melkweg and a 10 minute walk to the great Cafe Alto and Pardiso. Very clean rooms and really friendly and helpful staff.
  • Trams outside the window are a bit noisy - but hey it's a city hotel for real music lovers so just turn up the i-pod docking station!
