On request, a radio alarm clock and luggage rack are available. In the cosy bar with its woodcarving are remains of the ship in which the naval hero Michiel de Ruyter sailed the seven seas in the 17th century. It offers more than 70 different kinds of specialty beers on the beer menu.
Together with its sister hotel Old Quarter, the hotel is located at the spot where the first houses were built in Amsterdam. To protect the houses against water from the Amstel river a dam was built, and this is how the city got its name. Today, Dam Square is a major attraction in Amsterdam. The Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk, Madame Tussauds and the Bijenkorf department store are located around the square where street artists often perform. On the square is also the National Monument, commemorating the war casualties.
