Description

The small Hotel Old Nickel is run by a family. The multilingual staff is committed to ensure that your stay in Amsterdam will be a wonderful experience that you will remember for a long time. They gladly assist you with booking a tour or renting bicycles. The rooms have a shared bathroom on the floor. All rooms have a television, except the rooms in the annex. On request, a radio alarm clock and luggage rack are available. In the cosy bar with its woodcarving are remains of the ship in which the naval hero Michiel de Ruyter sailed the seven seas in the 17th century. It offers more than 70 different kinds of specialty beers on the beer menu.

Together with its sister hotel Old Quarter, the hotel is located at the spot where the first houses were built in Amsterdam. To protect the houses against water from the Amstel river a dam was built, and this is how the city got its name. Today, Dam Square is a major attraction in Amsterdam. The Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk, Madame Tussauds and the Bijenkorf department store are located around the square where street artists often perform. On the square is also the National Monument, commemorating the war casualties.

Food and Drinks

Breakfast is served from 07:30 to 10:00 h. and consists of eggs and bacon, coffee or tea and bread and jam.
The bar is open from 09:00 to 04:00 h. You can choose from more than 70 beers.

Internet

Wireless Internet is available througout the hotel free of charge.

The building where this museum for science and technology houses has become a real eye catcher at the 'IJ'. The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and the Hermitage are also great museums to visit. + Location
- very very small and very very smoked room. i could hardly sleep of this smell even 1 night! dirty.
Mark Farrugia Will definately visit this hotel again! Recommended
10
+ the persons behind the bar were very friendly :) location is awesome in the centre. altough the rooms have a shared bathroom, these were always clean.
- the stairs are a bit tight/no lift. these can be tricky after a long night in a coffeeshop or while transporting luggages in and out. Will definately visit again.
Anonymous Cosy weekends at old
7.2
+ cosy & old fashioned hotel bar near hotel victoria.
Anonymous Perfect location for having too much fun in Amsterdam
9.2
+ Brilliant hotel - was about as cheap as a hostel. Very friendly and relaxed bar staff, curfew of 4am but then the bar stays open and you can get to know the locals! Live music was excellent. Breakfast included. Rooms clean and the location was perfect - 5 mins from central station, 5 mins to RLD, 5 mins to lots of cafes.
- A bit pricey, but actually still one of the cheapest we managed to find in Amsterdam. Maybe not for families, but brilliant for a group of friends.
S. Reid Very clean, ideally located friendly hotel!
9.4
+ very clean with friendly staff , very central and near the central station, breakfast was fine, would definitely stay again!
- bit noisy as its a bar till 4am with loud music but its understandable as its such a central location
Sarah Rivers Perfect for short stay
8.6
+ Really close to the train station (and right next to the red light district), the place was quiet and clean.
- Our room was on the top floor; carrying heavy suitcases up four steep and narrow staircases was not funny. Having said that, we visited a friend at his hostel where the stairs were worse.
Anonymous Good localization but really rude staff
5.8
+ Breakfast and localization. Nice bar at the reception.
- The staff is rude. We paid all on the 1st day but one friend of mine checked in 1day later after the three of us (room for 4) and the man asked for the money and insisted with me that we hadn´t paid. After we show the receipt he made fun of me for complaining. Next day morning, a woman came and again shouted with us saying that my friend didn´t checked in. Besides that, they control you and ask if some of you go out and the others stay at the room. The bedding was burnned from ashes and not so clean.
Kenneth Strom Good location, nice bar but prepare for a very rude receptionist
3.6
+ Hotel location is very good and the bar was great with good service and live music in the evening.
- The girl in the reception was really rude and offensive. Without doubt the worst velcome I have ever experiensed.

+ 4am curfue, friendly staff, nice size room, clean shared bathroom&shower, fresh towels, location, price.
- cat in the bar..very annoying for people with allergies (myself), room a bit stuffy, very steep stairs not appropriate for elderly or children.
Thomas Milburn Perfect hotel for people on a budget

+ My Boy-friend and I stayed in the Old Nickle for 4 nights. I really enjoyed my stay there, the woman Ellen that greeted us at the front desk was very friendly and funny. Its perfectly central and everything you need is walking distance, you only have to turn a corner. It is the perfect place to stay for a budget holiday whether your with friends or a partner. You can smoke in your rooms which is a plus and there is no curfew. I found this place perfect for our trip. I would defo recommend this!
- Not much view from our window, but thats all!!!!
John Denison Hotel nickel is worth it

- shared bathroom basic facilities
Jakub Pure cosiness
9.6
+ I stayed 2 nights in Old NIckel Hotel and was more than satisfiied. The location could hardly be better. The house with a bar in which the hotel is placed is very very cosy. Both room and bathroom clean, staff very friendly, the breakfast simple but good. They have a very cute ginger cat in the bar :) I enjoyed my stay here and would recommend it to my friends.
- Slapping of the other rooms' doors was quite disturbing in the evening. The place is relatively noisy, which is the price for the very lively neighbourhood.
Steven Sharratt Very good hotel with excellent staff an location
7.6
+ Very close to central station an the red light district also close to the shopping district!
- 4 floors of very steep stairs if ur up the top hard work!! LOL

8.8
+ great location, two minutes from central station and right in the red light district. Very clean toilets and bed sheets. Friendly recepcionist and good bar. all better than i expected. Noisy? Yes, a bit. But it is the red light district. Anywhere will be noisy.
- room clean but with cigarette smell! Strong!

+ Good location, very friendly personnel.
Taylor Bednarz Red Light Nite Life
6.2
+ Guy working in evening was very friendly and helpful. Lady working mornings was snotty. Good location.
- Very small room.
Ljiljana Dekic Great location, comfort and a lovely helpful landlady.
10
+ Great central position, short walking distance from Amsterdam Centraal Station and major tourist sites; hotel has 2 buildings (same street, main above the landlady's pub, the other about 10 meters away); clean shower, toilet, room, bedding, towels; TV with range of channels in room; the landlady is very helpful, welcoming and cheerful; smoking is allowed in rooms; no curfew, you get a key for main entrance and room and are free to go in/out as you please.
- Absolutely no minus points; if you're easy-going, want comfort without fuss and your mind is set on exploring Amsterdam then this is the place to stay; if you're fussy and generally hard to please however then this is not for you - considering the location and what you get, criticism and complaints would really be out of order and unfair; excellent deal all round for short or longish stay.
Anonymous Do it.
8.6
+ Location, staff
- 4am Karaoke bar across the street.
LAC Review of a cool/"chic" family
6.0
+ Helpful service, in reception and breakfast. Good breakfast!
- Crammed bedroom; we were four. Did not like the sink's plastic glasses, prefer glass. For a hotel, shower in the corridor? Beyond that, malfunctioning shower. Breakfast should be broadened, say, müsli.
Anonymous Good party hotel
5.6
+ Good service and nice personell. It was easy to find. Smoking was allowed inside.
- No air condition, small rooms, shared bathrooms, showers were quite poor (temperature was changing).
Andy Basic but very central!
6.4
+ Great location on Nieuwe Brugsteeg just 5 minutes walk from Centraal Station (the main train station) and just a few minutes walk north of the Red Light District. Friendly staff and a very reasonable price.
- Very basic, but this is common for this type of hotel in Amsterdam.
Lorraine Le Baron Séjour agréable
8.0
+ Situé juste à coté de la gare et en plein centre ville. Accueil agréable. Propre.
- Prévoir des boules quies, juste pour les portes qui claquent (portes automatiques)
diana
6.4
+ Location is perfect. Right in the city center with a walking distance of 5 mins from the Central Station.
- Rooms are not comfortable, so small. It's nearly impossible to sleep at night because of the street noise, slamming doors and squeaky stairs.
Monika Rita Dinya Had a lovely weekend, best birthday ever!
9.0
+ Excellent service, friendly enviroment, cleanliness also good, close to everything... city centre, central station, shops, museums etc... Perfect for young adventurous ppl - group of friend, couples - who has limited budget...
neil Good value for money
6.6
+ I had a tiny room with shared facilities and liked it a lot. Very clean. Staff was friendly. Breakfast OK. I could overlook the busy old Amsterdam street from my window - nice.
- Street noise and live music from the bar - but then again - why stay in central Amsterdam near the red light district if you want it nice and quiet..? Bring earplugs ;-)
Morten Scheel Good location but that's it.
5.0
+ Apart from the old lady, the staff was nice and helpful.
- An old lady (the owner?) replied to all requests with "NO", and also enforced a "no electronic devices" policy during breakfast.
Bryan Great Value Great Location
9.0
+ Great location, friendly staff, good breakfast, value for money and a bar that sells 60+ beers.
- Cant think of any.
Anonymous Friendly staff
8.0
+ the staff is really friendly and nice! if you go there, must have a drink at the bar
- we were up on the forth level, but can still smell people smoking...
Graeme Reynolds Cheap & Centrally located
7.0
+ Good Location Excellent value Open 24 hours a day
- - Its on a busy street, so don't expect peace and quiet before 4:00 in the morning - my room was on the 4th floor up steep steps with no lift - the breakfast that is included is very poor, but the option exists to pay €5 extra to upgrade it.
Stuart Corney Watching the Giro
4.4
+ Clean sheets
- Shower didn't work. Bed covers smelt of cigarette smoke and had burn holes in them.
Cody Fenton-Robertson Charming and cool, but not budget
7.0
+ Friendly staff. Free breakfast and 10% dicount on lunch / dinner in the bar. Cable TV.
- I thought it was a bit too expensive for what it was, a room above a bar. My room was literally in the attic.
David Porrill Cheap and cheerful in Amsterdam
8.8
+ Stayed in the Old Nickels sister hotel round the corner "old quarter" basic and clean, safe and secure feeling. Comfy beds and not too noisy considering in busy area. Friendly staff, good breakfast. Really handy location, about 5 minutes walk from Cental station. Cost us 55 Euros a night between 2, bargain!
- none
sergio vegas Very good location!!
7.4
+ The hotel has a very good location. Our twin bedroom was nice. The breakfast was very good.
- There are a lot of stairs if you have to go to the last flat
Anonymous Very near to Central Station
8.8
+ I choose this hotel mainly because of its nearest location to the Amsterdam Central, as well as to various interesting places to go. The service is excellent. The most important thing, i can leave my luggage even after checking out. Would recommend it for everyone but not with those with kids since its location is in red light district area..
- It can be quite noisy at night even at 3-4 am.
Diogo
7.2
+ Two minutes from the central station, quiet street, great for a short stay to amsterdam
- room was on 4th level and the stairs were steep and narrow
NA Clean with tiny rooms
6.2
+ staff is friendly and helpful. the ground floor is a cool bar, live music 3 days a week and many kinds of beer.
- my room was really really tiny, barely 3 square meters. when i checked in they wanted the full payment in advance, which is unusual. the price seemed quite high for a room with no bath.
Dominik Naumann Fine and cheap place for young people
8.2
+ Good price for apropriate quality. Very central where the amusement area is. Excellent for young people. The room even had a window, which seems to be almost special in this part of the city. Breakfast was very fine, friendly people there.
- The real place to stay can be somewhere else than the the address of the hotel. Our place was fine, but I don't know the other two. Nothing for old people that don't like steep stairways or all the famous 'attractions' out there...
