Score of 11 reviews: 7.1

The Old Nickel is a small family-run hotel. The multilingual staff are committed to ensure that your stay in Amsterdam will be a wonderful and truly memorable experience to stay with you for years to come. They will gladly assist you in booking a tour or renting bicycles. The rooms have a shared bathroom on the same floor. All rooms come with a television, except the rooms in the annex. A radio alarm clock and luggage rack are available on request. The cosy bar with its woodcarvings features 17th century remains of the ship with which the naval hero Michiel de Ruyter once sailed the seven seas. The bar also offers more than 70 different kinds of specialty beers.

The hotel is situated on the spot where the first houses of Amsterdam were built. To protect the houses against water from the river Amstel, a dam was built, and this is how the city got its name. Today, Dam Square is a major attraction in Amsterdam. The Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk, Madame Tussauds and the Bijenkorf department store are all located around this square; a place where street artists also regularly perform. Also situated on Dam square is the National Monument commemorating war casualties.

You have to go to Asia to find worse dumps than this....
  • + Location is great.
  • Stayed in the Schagen building, not main hotel as apparently Old Nickel has only 2 2-person rooms. No notice given of this change. Schagen is a dump. Room felt like a cell. Was obviously a corridor in the past. Paint grim. Bathroom dirty/smelly and shower flooded. Incredibly noisy both outside and inside. Will not be returning

Ok for a short stay, but there's better options
  • + Location, some of the staff were nice.
  • Some really small rooms resembling jail, shower was poor, not all stall were polite. Not really worth the price.

  • + the persons behind the bar were very friendly :) location is awesome in the centre. altough the rooms have a shared bathroom, these were always clean.
  • the stairs are a bit tight/no lift. these can be tricky after a long night in a coffeeshop or while transporting luggages in and out. Will definately visit again.

Perfect location for having too much fun in Amsterdam
  • + Brilliant hotel - was about as cheap as a hostel. Very friendly and relaxed bar staff, curfew of 4am but then the bar stays open and you can get to know the locals! Live music was excellent. Breakfast included. Rooms clean and the location was perfect - 5 mins from central station, 5 mins to RLD, 5 mins to lots of cafes.
  • A bit pricey, but actually still one of the cheapest we managed to find in Amsterdam. Maybe not for families, but brilliant for a group of friends.

Perfect for short stay
  • + Really close to the train station (and right next to the red light district), the place was quiet and clean.
  • Our room was on the top floor; carrying heavy suitcases up four steep and narrow staircases was not funny. Having said that, we visited a friend at his hostel where the stairs were worse.

Good localization but really rude staff
  • + Breakfast and localization. Nice bar at the reception.
  • The staff is rude. We paid all on the 1st day but one friend of mine checked in 1day later after the three of us (room for 4) and the man asked for the money and insisted with me that we hadn't paid. After we show the receipt he made fun of me for complaining. Next day morning, a woman came and again shouted with us saying that my friend didn't checked in. Besides that, they control you and ask if some of you go out and the others stay at the room. The bedding was burnned from ashes and not so clean.

  • + Hotel location is very good and the bar was great with good service and live music in the evening.
  • The girl in the reception was really rude and offensive. Without doubt the worst velcome I have ever experiensed.

  • + Good service, friendly people, reasonable price, tv, ashtray ("hasj/weed upstairs ok, downstairs not ok"),

I would definetly recommend this!
  • + My Boy-friend and I stayed in the Old Nickle for 4 nights. I really enjoyed my stay there, the woman Ellen that greeted us at the front desk was very friendly and funny. Its perfectly central and everything you need is walking distance, you only have to turn a corner. It is the perfect place to stay for a budget holiday whether your with friends or a partner. You can smoke in your rooms which is a plus and there is no curfew. I found this place perfect for our trip. I would defo recommend this!
  • Not much view from our window, but thats all!!!!

Pure cosiness
  • + I stayed 2 nights in Old NIckel Hotel and was more than satisfiied. The location could hardly be better. The house with a bar in which the hotel is placed is very very cosy. Both room and bathroom clean, staff very friendly, the breakfast simple but good. They have a very cute ginger cat in the bar :) I enjoyed my stay here and would recommend it to my friends.
  • Slapping of the other rooms' doors was quite disturbing in the evening. The place is relatively noisy, which is the price for the very lively neighbourhood.

  • + great location, two minutes from central station and right in the red light district. Very clean toilets and bed sheets. Friendly recepcionist and good bar. all better than i expected. Noisy? Yes, a bit. But it is the red light district. Anywhere will be noisy.

  • (Young couples)
Great location, comfort and a lovely helpful landlady.
  • + Great central position, short walking distance from Amsterdam Centraal Station and major tourist sites; hotel has 2 buildings (same street, main above the landlady's pub, the other about 10 meters away); clean shower, toilet, room, bedding, towels; TV with range of channels in room; the landlady is very helpful, welcoming and cheerful; smoking is allowed in rooms; no curfew, you get a key for main entrance and room and are free to go in/out as you please.
  • Absolutely no minus points; if you're easy-going, want comfort without fuss and your mind is set on exploring Amsterdam then this is the place to stay; if you're fussy and generally hard to please however then this is not for you - considering the location and what you get, criticism and complaints would really be out of order and unfair; excellent deal all round for short or longish stay.

Review of a cool/"chic" family
  • + Helpful service, in reception and breakfast. Good breakfast!
  • Crammed bedroom; we were four. Did not like the sink's plastic glasses, prefer glass. For a hotel, shower in the corridor? Beyond that, malfunctioning shower. Breakfast should be broadened, say, müsli.
