The NH Doelen hotel is very conveniently situated if you want to explore the city of Amsterdam. The Rembrandthuis, Joods Historisch Museum and the flower market are all close by. The tram that halts near the hotel enables you to easily reach every part of the city.

From the breakfast room you have a magnificent view of the Amstel river where the hotel has it's own jetty. Some rooms also overlook other canals. Nearby there is a variety of restaurants, bars and pubs. There is something for everybody. As can be expected in a 4 star hotel, the rooms are all equipped with modern amenities, television, mini-bar, coffee and tea making facilities, hair dryer and access to wireless internet.

Brenda One of the gems in the Amsterdam collection: 7 February 2011; 9.8; + We have stayed at the Doelen every year for the last 20 years, ever since we first found it. That says it all, without further comment. But if you need more - it's a great hotel in a perfect place.

For the high price I have paid the room(s)are small and grubby. For upgrade they wanted additional money (looks to be new strategy to maximize profit...)

Everything is close to the hotel.; - One day the "clean" towels (both of them) were dirty. I wasn't satisfied with payment condition. It is too secure for the hotel and bad for guest. I wonder this method refers to every guest or only to us from Hungary. I am sorry you didn't trust us. We haven't been a lot of country so far (individual and business trip)and everywhere pay the bill correctly. I hope I will get my "blocked" money and I will not have problem about it.

Location not very bad, but closeness to where it happens, means noise!; - Nightstaff friendly, but not knowledgeable. Dusty room and dirty blanket full of curly hairs from previous visitors. Water hardly dribbling from shower.

Kirsten McGeever I love Amsterdam: 31 May 2009; 9.0; + The gentleman on reception whose name I didn't catch was excellent and completely made our entire stay the pleasure that it was. He went out of his way to accommodate us and showed top quality customer service skills. I stayed in one of the NH hotels in Amsterdam last year and I found the reception staff unfriendly and unhelpful but staying in this NH hotel has encouraged me to try others around europe. Thanks again for a wonderful stay.

Patrick Gracious old world charm with excellent staff: 31 May 2009; 7.4; + friendly, patient, kind and most helpful staff. Early check in was allowed. Big plus when, as in our case, an early flight gets you into Amsterdam at 10 am. Access to wonderful coffee (heaven!)through corridor to next door. Great 'old-world' atmosphere.; - re room 302: room 'sad' and tatty due to torn/damaged wallpaper and general need of refurbishment. Bathroom was seriously defective. Access to shower was really dangerous, false ceiling dirty. In general the bathroom was the biggest disappointment. This is an important point, given tourists get hot and tired etc, and need to shower more frequently than usual. Instead it was a major 'task' to use the facilities. Too much furniture in room thus making it difficult to 'navigate'. Room should be completely redesigned to make better use of space.

Maria Queens Day Amsterdam 2009: 5 May 2009; 9.8; + very comfortable mattress very large bath towels a fridge great location very friendly and helpful staff fruit?-scented bath products - lovely; - had difficulty climbing out of the bath - maybe a few rooms with just showers might be of benefit. pillows very plump, provision of one thin one. This is a personal preference though. breakfast not included in the price.

Anonymous Queen's Day 2009: 3 May 2009; 9.0; + Considering we were in Amsterdam for Queen's Day, the biggest party of the year in the Netherlands, the NL Doelen was surprisingly peaceful. It was the perfect location to use as base while taking part in all of the city's festivities.

Wilco Manussen Perfect hotel for a city-break.: 26 April 2009; 8.6; + The location is an absolute plus. Close to the Rembrandtsplein and all the hot spots in the city-center.; - The staff is very helpful, but the communication between members could be improved. We asked the reception to have the room cleaned during our absence in the evening, but when we returned to our room nothing was done...

Anonymous Great place to stay if they would take their guests for their word: 7 January 2009; 8.4; + Great location and a very nice building.; - Arrival started off great: our room got upgraded to a junior suite and we received complementary breakfast. Unfortunately by the next morning, selective amnesia set in and we were charged 18Euro/person for breakfast. After mentioning the promise of complementary breakfast, they tried offering 25% off coupons. Ultimately, one talk with the manager and one call to the receptionist that made the promise later, we got the breakfast for free. All in all, I think this FBI level inquiry was a little elaborate for a cup of coffee and some yogurt.

Arrived in morning and was given our room straight away so very happy with service. All staff were very obliging to our needs.; - The breakfast was very expensive. We did enjoy it but thought it would of been cheaper to eat outside.

STEVEN J WHITE DO NOT TALK TO THE NIGHT CLERK AND YOU WILL HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME: 5 October 2008; 9.8; + Everything with the exclusion of a older man with glasses who worked Wednesday night shift, who corrected my pronunciation, was very combative, rude and should never work in the hospitality industry, was nice. That, however, was overshadowed by day shift's Michael's non stop smile, perfect English and zealous desire to make my stay as great as he could make it.. my maid and most of the 'desk girls' were close the same. Michael was just the best and treated everyone the same. Room was kept perfect, bathrooms spacious,the gleaming marble and chrome was spotless and again maid was pleasent and very very happy to help with requests. As I come there twice a year, I have stayed at most of the 4 stars in Amsterdam and it was at least equal to all of them at a better price. Hotels.nl was the only site that I found on the internet that had the exact special I wanted at the last minute. With the USD problem I will still shop around but will consider NH Doelen on my next trip in November/08 and use Hotels.nl to book it.

Ulf L A faulty pearl: 10 August 2008; 8.0; + View from room window magnificent. Marvellous location. Helpful receptionists.; - Room small for 2 persons with (overseas) luggage. Beds small. Mattress too soft, std pillows too soft (and high). No hall porter to help with luggage. When we were at your hotel the weather was hot and as there was no air cond. we always left the window open. A certain day, when coming back to the room we found that pigeon(s) had entered and left a souvenir (shitting) on the carpet. We think that the hotel should warn guests about that. Elevator slow. Breakfast expensive, should be included.

serdar toker Don't (even you are first timers like us): 27 July 2008; 3.8; + well well.. nothing spectecular. the staff was ok but you expect that naturally.; - we stayed only for 2 nights and paid 250 Euros but the room was so small for a 4 stars hotel whatsmore we learned it is the same for most rooms in amsterdam because of the land itself.so i guess we will try a hostel next time :) the bed was not comfortable at all and i do not want to mention the TV which was ancient as the building. The city is practically the canal yet they want 30 euros extra for "the canal view" AND IT IS NOT NEAR THE DAM you have to walk or take the tram.

Additionally, the rooms not on the canal suffer from noise pollution, especially at about 7:30 each morning, as there seems to be a glass recycling business that has moved next door and uses heavy machinery and glass crushing at ridiculous hours.

Reception staff very helpfull. delighted to get a smoking room, with a balcony and canal views! handy little cafe downstairs for snacks. great price for 4 star! have paid alot more for really bad hotels in Ireland so I was impressed overall (i used to work in the hotel business so i'm fairly hard to please!!) Really enjoyed our stay and have already recommended hotel to friends and family.; - Room could have been cleaner, minibar was not restocked, or toilet paper. housekeeping seem to do the bare minimum! beds and bathroom spotless however. a little disappointed that we had 2 single beds rather than a double. easily pushed together! but was actually glad of extra space as the nights were very warm!

Allan Makura: 13 January 2008; 3.4; + Location: close to public transport.; - Room was not cleaned. When I checked in it was not looking clean at all. During my stay only the bed was being made, the room was not being cleaned. The empty sugar packets/coffee sachets remained on the drawers floors the whole stay. The TV system was not working half the time so couldn't watch any movies. I have stayed in 3 star hotels that are by far better than this. It does not deserve such a rating.
