Description

NH Schiller Hotel Amsterdam is housed in an important building designed by architects M.J.E. Lippits and N.H.W. Scholte. The combination of Jugendstil and traditionalism, the sculptures on the facade and the graceful wrought iron ornaments merge the art deco Hotel with the allure of the Rembrandtplein, like a true work of art.

In 1886 the renowned restaurant De Kuil carried an impressive reputation in Amsterdam. Thanks to the successful manager, George Schiller, who bought the worn out Café du Parc in 1892, the premises on the Rembrandtplein square increased the prosperity of the area. Café du Parc and Restaurant De Kuil were soon known for their excellent beers and culinary and relaxed atmosphere. Encouraged by the Royal Dutch Beer brewer de Amstel, the construction of a brand new hotel/café/restaurant was set in motion and helped to continue the growth of the family business.

The main hall of the café and restaurant is situated on the ground floor and owes its beauty to the artwork of the stained glass in four high windows. Alongside images with the civic crest of Amsterdam (the Dutch lion, a hop plant and a grapevine), the windows also provide a splendid view of the Rembrandtplein.

Ever since 1950 several modifications, based on the design of J.J.B. Franswa, have revitalised the hotel. The restaurant was divided into a hotel lobby and separate dining area. Many of the authentic elements were preserved, including the impressive staircase with wrought iron railings leading from the hallway.

Hotel Schiller was run by the Schiller family but this came to an end in 1970. The cultural heritage of the family was passed on in the form of 350 paintings from the hand of Frits Schiller, son of George. These can still be admired at the hotel. The two boardrooms can be used for conferences as well as private dinners. The rooms can accommodate 12 persons each and dwell in natural light.

Food and Drinks

Brasserie Schiller offers several culinary specialities, accompanied by a fine selection of wines. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be consumed in the rooms, as well as on the terrace. The kitchen is internationally orientated, with French and Dutch influences. The separate rooms can accommodate larger groups of up to 200 persons. Every day, a three course menu is offered at a special rate. Breakfast consists of a buffet including warm and cold dishes (Breakfresh) and is served from 07:00 to 10:30 h.

In the hotel wireless internet (WiFi) is available at an additional charge. In the lobby a public computer with internet is available.

Surroundings

The Rembrandtplein is located in the heart of the city centre. From the Rembrandtplein, in the inner canal region you can walk straight up to the Damrak. Also, many museums, such as the Rembrandthuis and the Jewish Historical Museum are easy to reach. The Rembrandtplein is always full of life and can be considered the 'pulse of Amsterdam'.

Fab location, bit chilly and not so happy with the reception staff
Fantastic location and extremely clean.
A little on the expensive side. Extra blankets in the wardrobe (instead of an extra pillow) would be a good idea during the winter, the room was a bit cold when we stayed. Reception staff firstly sent us to a room with a small single bed (there were two of us). We were tired and although we can forgive this mix up, I was not happy when I came down to use the internet. The lasy at reception said he had no coupons and while I stood there waiting, the receptionist continued to serve other customers, do check outs, etc. and left me standing waiting. In the end I gave up waiting and went to an internet cafe.

The reception staff were friendly and efficient as were the breakfast room staff. The room was spacious quiet and very comfortable. The toiletries very fragrant!
Only a very minor point - a couple of cushions (or extra pillows) to prop up in bed would have been useful, to make reading or watching TV easier.

The walls were thin, although if you need a quiet place to stay reconsider Amsterdam's Centrum and opt for somewhere in the suburbs.

Brilliant hotel on Rembrandtsplein.
We got given a room with a huge balcony facing Rembrandtsplein at no extra cost, the staff were generally smiling and helpful. Nice arrangement of complimentary toiletries. For an Amsterdam hotel, the room is really big. This hotel was recommended to me by a friend who travels to Amsterdam a lot and I wasn't disappointed. The location is brilliant -really central but in a far better area than most hotels which are near to the main Station.
The price of the breakfast is extremely high for what is given (general continental breakfast) and there are literally dozens of cafes nearby where you can get the same breakfast for less than half what the hotel charges. Also there were a few cracked tiles in the bathroom, but nothing major.

Good location for entertainment, eating out, bars etc, close to tram and canal boat stops. Peter the duty manager arranged for a room transfer as we were unhappy with our 1st night's stay.
A very noisy hotel if you are overlooking the Rembrandt Square. The standard of rooms was just about acceptable but not Art Deco. The price is based on 4 stars but feel that this highly overated. Meals were expensive and not good value for money.

The hotel location was very convenient to museums and restaurants. The hotel was clean and the staff members were courteous and efficient. We enjoyed having the electric kettle in the room to make tea and hot chocolate. A small book of bedside stories was a nice touch on the night table.
There was a huge, very bright neon sign with rotating images in the square right outside the hotel that lit up the entire area in the evening. Though the two rooms we had in the front were a bit bigger and had a nice view of the square below, the third room we had in the back of the hotel was quieter. Internet connection fee was a bit steep.

Very comfortable bed and crisp bed linen. Nice option to change pillow but we did not need to.
No need for the cleaners to spray the room with air freshener every day. Street noise would not have been bearable without ear plugs. Breakfast very expensive.

All staff that we dealt with on our stay were very friendly & helpful. The hotel was in a perfect location for us. We are already talking about booking up for next year. We will recommend this hotel to anyone we know that is thinking about coming to Amsterdam.

Apart from the nosey/interfering/intolerant/power tripping duty manager, the stay was excellent. The reception staff were especially helpful and friendly, top marks to them.
be aware that having smoked one joint in my 'smoking' room, I soon received a knock on the door from the duty manager telling me that cannabis is illegal in holland and could I stop. I did of course stop but it begs the questions, was she waiting outside my room? was I being unfairly singled out? was I being surveilled? and at what point does the business of a paying customer become the business of the duty manager?

Reception staff are excellent, doing their best under difficult circumstances. Rooms are comfortable.
The hotel needs decorating - it is scruffy and looks worn. There is not enough staff on reception so they are always overworked and trying to serve several people at once. Consequently check-out is slow.

I enjoyed my stay at the hotel. It was in an excellent location, the room was clean and comfortable and I really appreciated the extras in the room like a magazine to read and the bottles of water. All the staff were very helpful and friendly.
Only a couple of things, it was a little cold in the room sometimes and it would have been handy to have an iron in the room.

You need to list the price of the bottled water. Without a full minibar in the room one would assume the water is free without a price list.
