+ Staff very friendly and particularly helpful. Room very large and comfortable, clean and well furnished.

- Quite a trek to the room, up several flights of stairs, some spiral, and very steep, quite difficult with luggage and elderly parents! Might have been helpful to have made us aware of this.

+ Great location in terms of walking to historic sites and shopping. Excellent restaurants nearby. Near train station. Reasonable price.

- Very noisy at night until 2 AM. Beds very hard and uncomfortable.Room hot and many mosquitoes when window open. No screens on windows. Only one washer & dryer which is also used by cleaning staff so difficult to find time available for use. Kitchen needs a knife to chop vegetables etc.

- Nightmare to find. Had to go to a different hotel to get the key and unclear instuctions were given on how we found our room which was in a seperate building.

+ Brilliant service and location. Excellent sized rooms.

- The decor needs updating. Our room 144 leaked around the window and had many mosquitos. There was no mirror except for one in the bathroom (not suitable for doing make up) so I purchased one. Pillows should be replaced. These are purely constructive criticism as we did enjoy our stay and would return. Many thanks.

- The room we had, 13, was very very noisy and was woken up multiple times each night because of parties. I wouldn't choose this hotel again.

+ The room was very large for a european room. The staff was extremely helpful. They gave us maps and info on Haarlem and Amsterdam. This is the place to stay if you do not want to drive in Amsterdam. Haarlem is much slower paced it is only a 15 min trian ride to Amsterdam and the trains leave every ten minutes. The hotel is only a five minute walk to the train station.

+ Price correct. Very good location in a walking area with shops and cultural interests. Not too far from Haarlem central station. Easy to find by car, parking in the surroundings (not too expensive). Large room with kitchen.

+ unbelievably comfortable bed; nice, helpful staff

- A bit old furniture (cupboards), too frequent church-bell activity at the nearby church (nice melodies, though), lack of bathtub or closed shower-stall or at least a shower-curtain, so after a shower the whole bathroom is soaking wet.

+ Great location across from the cathedral. Parking garage around the corner. Desk extremely helpful; even met me in person at night in the city in order to guide me to the hotel through a myriad of back streets. Nice basic hotel; great view from the 4th floor.

- Seriously outdated and ugly furniture, single beds, grubby bathroom/toilet. Price/quality easily the lowest I have ever witnessed. The "You booked it yourself" attitude of the reception staff (in another Hotel) didn't do anything to help my mood.

+ A clean, comfortable and spacious apartment in a fantastic location. It's only a 15-min walk plus 15-min train journey to Amsterdam Centraal, but we ended up making only one day-trip there. Haarlem is a beautiful and interesting place in its own right and we found plenty to do in the area.

- Kitchen facilities are the bare minimum (but still possible to cook basic snacks and make tea and coffee).

+ The staff at the front desk were exceptional. Full of information and very helpful. The room was large and comfortable. The hotel is not in Amsterdam, it is in Haarlem- half an hour away from Amsterdam- But Haarlem is AMAZING. Good location, right near some "cafes".

- Tiny TV. Shower had no curtain and caused a mess. everything else was good for the money paid.

+ Very odd place which feels like an old office block. That being said, the room was huge, clean and it's very, very well located for the town centre. Beds also excellent. There's also free, secure bike parking down the road. It's fine but I wouldn't stay for more than a night or two... There's also free wi-fi - yay!

- No reception - you have to go to their sister hotel to check-in. The room decor is awful with antique style pine furniture and hideous ceiling tiles each looking very strange in this staff-less 1960s hotel.

- Apartment was quite difficult to find. Day 2 of visit found someone else's food mysteriously in refrigerator...a little disturbing!

+ VERY LARGE ROOM WITH KITCHEN TO AVOID SPENDING TOO MUCH MONEY FOR FOOD IF THE BUDGET IS SMALL THE PLACE IS IN THE CENTER OF THE CITY OF HAARLEM BUT THERE IS NO NOISE THE RECEPTION PEOPLE IS VERY KIND COMPLETE LIBERTY

- I DON T FIND MINUS POINTS EXCEPT MAYBE THE FLOOR CARPET WHICH IS NOT VERY CLEAN

+ We were a party of 4 and had booked 2 rooms. One of the rooms was what you would expect from a budget hotel, however the other room had been upgraded to an apartment with kitchen, table & chairs, settee, armchair, sideboard, etc. Excellent for the price especially if we had been staying longer. Hotel is right in the centre of Haarlem excellent for restaurants, cathedral etc

- Joops hotel was difficult to find and we had to ask directions. It is only used as the accommodation as a sister hotel is used as reception and for breakfast. Joops is down a side road and is only a door with the name on it so difficult to find without help.

- Geen koffiezetapparaat en magnetron aanwezig (staan wel op inventarislijst), erg gehorig (veel herrie 's nachts, zondagochtend om 7 uur wakker geworden door opruimdiensten), men was handdoek vergeten neer te leggen en wij zijn in hotel extra handdoek gaan vragen. Erg onbeleefde dame had geen tijd om het te brengen. We konden het 's avonds zelf op komen halen. De medewerker 's nachts wist echter van niets!

+ Brilliant location in the centre of Haarlem - a lovely place with lots to do and see. Good bars and restaurants within a 'spit'. Quiet rooms despite the proximity to the 'action'. Easy travel to Amsterdam, Schipol or the coast.

- A little shabby around the entrance and our 'double' bed was in fact two singles pushed together - not too bad in theory but the mattresses were of different thicknesses resulting in a distinct height difference between the two!

+ Good location, met our sleeping and bathing needs. Water was hot without waiting. We loved Haarlem.

- We left our towels on the rack indicating that we did not want new towels and we received them anyway, so the staff were not reading the signs.

+ Super location, room was nice and clean, staff friendly. The value for money was ok but really the room was not much more than a youth hostel, for nearly twice the price. But I think we would come back here again.

- Shame not to have option for making tea and coffee in the room after a flight and long bus ride!

+ Quet and easily accessible. The rooms were always clean and tidy.

- No prior knowledge that reception would be at the Ambassadors, therefore we carried our suitcases unnecessarily twice. The other critism is there is no telephone system. Our daughter needed to contact us but could not.

+ Fabulous location! Less than 15 minute walk to Haarlem Central train station. Lots of nearby restaurants, markets and shops. Fabuous home away from home. Staff most gracious and helpful.

- Though posted eco-friendly policy, changed towels everyday whether needed or not.

+ Nice, spacious room on a quiet side street. Clean, pleasantly decorated room, basic cooking facilities very welcome.

- No longer called Joops! Unclear sign at the address indicated (back entrance to a separate wing). No indication on the website of hotel name-change, or how to get from the address indicated there to the reception area on another street entirely! Typical Dutch, boat-type bathroom where the shower wets the whole room --with no squeegee. A problem finding private dry spot to dress when traveling with children!

+ The room was large and clean. An elevator was available. The room was fairly quiet and the beds were comfortable. Check-in and out were efficient. This would have been a great place to stay except for the safety concerns. If you stay here, make sure you bring your own cell phone.

- There were several safety concerns with this hotel. Joops is located around the corner, down a narrow street, and a block away from the main hotel entrance. The entrance door is next to a seedy bar. This all-glass entry door had huge cracks in it. There was no phone in the room for emergencies - to contact the main desk we had to walk past the seedy bar all the way to the main lobby. There was no peep-hole in the door. The kitchen did not have a microwave as it showed in the photos. The guest laundry had a non-working washer/dryer that, according to the concierge, hadn't worked for weeks. The main desk personnel seemed perturbed at having to leave their back office area to grudgingly answer our questions.
