Vondelkerk in Amsterdam
The Vondelkerk (Vondel Church) was designed by P.J.H. Cuypers. This architect also designed the Rijksmuseum and the Centraal Station. It is situated in the middle of a residential area. This is due to Cuyper's idealistic outlook. He wanted churches to be right between the houses precisely so that they could contribute to an ideal society.
In 1880 the first service was held in this church. This nineteenth century church was one of the first buildings to be listed as a monument by the government.
In 1978 there were plans to demolish the Vondel Church, because it was in such a bad state. Thankfully, a group of individuals were able to prevent this from happening by setting up a foundation to help restore this old church. Offices have also established at this address since 1986. And the church has since proven to be a perfect spot for weddings and other special occasions.
This church is named after Joost van den Vondel, a famous Dutch writer and poet. He lived from 1587 until 1679. There are many streets named after him in the Netherlands. The Vondel Church is also located in the Vondelstraat and leads to the green oasis of the Vondelpark.
