Avoid the carnival
The staff was extremely cordial and helpful.
There were two the almost catastrophic problem was that this was the week a carnival filled the square, with dangerously high-decibel music going from early afternoon to almost midnight each night. The hotel had no control over this, but they might have warned us in advance. (The did offer us an alternate room after the first night.) The second problem was that there was no wi-fi connection on our (top) floor. We had to sit in the stairwell one flight down to use the internet.
*my tipI advise the hotel staff not to recommend the Sphynx parking lot. Thieves stole the gas from our rental car and damaged the fuel tank in doing so. The car broke down in Heerlen, and it took us another four hours to finally reach the Koln-Bonn airport.
